About Yalukit Willam Ngargee: People Place Gathering

The fifth Yalukit Willam Ngargee: People Place Gathering festival program runs from Thursday 7 January to Tuesday 9 February 2010 with the main festival day, Saturday 6 February opening the nine day St Kilda Festival program for the City of Port Phillip.

The Yalukit Willam Ngargee main festival day includes emerging and established Aboriginal, Torres Strait Island, Polynesian and Indian musicians and dancers, interactive programs, children’s activities and a wide selection of affordable arts and wares available for sale at the Koorie Night Markets.

Featuring on the 2010 Wominjeka Willam: Welcome Place stage are Bart Willoughby with Deline Briscoe and Grrilla Step, Ian Tambo Band, Charcoal Club, Rachal Wirrpanda, Joe Geia Band, Skye Taikato, Drew Namok, Jayden Lilyest and Jake Hapet.

Also, the premiere of celebrated Indigenous contemporary dancer Jacob Boehme’s adaptation of traditional men’s lore story Lu’arn as told by Boon Wurrung elder Aunty Carolyn Briggs, Kulin Bhumi Indigenous and Indian dance fusion, Nikki Ashby, Let’s Shake for Reconciliation, Etchings Indigenous readings, roving entertainment and so much more.

Main Festival Music Day takes place 12pm – 10pm Saturday 6 February, at O’Donnell Gardens, corner of Acland St and Lower Esplanade, St Kilda.

Continuing on into the St Kilda Festival’s Live N Local week, the Yalukit Willam Ngargee presents Jumbi’s Gendook: ‘Brother in Laws Canoe’. An exhibit by East Gippsland Koorie Artists Lennie Hayes and Frances Harrison who have worked with artist mentor Gary Yellen, craft an inspirational canoe of family memories and a series of lino prints depicting its construction.

The exhibition launches 6.30pm – 8.30pm Tuesday 9 February at Eildon Mansion, 51 Grey St, St. Kilda. The Yalukit Willam Ngargee is proudly produced by the City of Port Phillip and funded by FAHCSIA. It is proudly held on Boon Wurrung Country
